As a Distinguished Engineer, Quality at Becton, Dickinson and Company, you will be a recognized technical leader, driving significant advancements in quality engineering methodologies, strategies, and practices across the organization to ensure the highest standards of product safety, efficacy, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design novel experiments, tests, designs, and platforms and utilize engineering resources to drive project completion for moderately complex problems

  • Evaluate external technologies, intellectual properties, and suppliers for business development opportunities to solve moderately complex problems

  • Participate in engineering advisory board (e.g., ISO committee, validation board, industry forums)

  • Provide strategic direction and guidance on all Quality projects within business unit including process improvements

  • Provide recommendations, identify and gain buy-in from senior management in support of new projects, initiatives, and/or programs (e.g., identify steering committee)

  • SME technical expertise in certain technical disciplines (e.g., electronics, metals, polymers, molding, extrusions, etc.)

  • Train, coach, and guide lower level employees on highly complex or novel procedures

  • May be selected as an Independent Reviewer for design review

  • Lead training, new system procedures, and new method development

  • Extensive experience with risk management tools and techniques (e.g., FMEA, PHA, FTA).

  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., Minitab, JMP) and advanced statistical analysis.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

  • Other incidental duties


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Scientific field, 12 years experience including either industry or industry/education Required or

  • Master's Degree or equivalent in Engineering or Scientific field, 11 Year experience including either industry or industry/education Required or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering or Scientific field, 8 years experience including either industry or industry/education Required


Additional Skills:

  • Proven expertise in usage of MS Office Suite

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings

  • Proven expertise in statistical techniques

  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills

  • Ability to translate highly complex and technical information to all levels of the organizations

  • Recognized as an expert in own area within the organization

  • Expert knowledge and understanding and knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts relevant to Quality Engineering (e.g., CQE body of knowledge)

  • Demonstrated expertise and deep understanding of global medical device regulations and standards (e.g., FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, MDR, MDSAP).

  • Coach and mentor Six Sigma concepts with the ability to lead projects utilizing these principles

  • Coach and mentor Quality Engineering (e.g., CQE body of knowledge) concepts with the ability to lead projects utilizing these principles

  • Advanced problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Expert understanding of processes and equipment used in assigned work

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to influence change and challenge status quo with respect to opportunities for improvement

  • Strict attention to detail

  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment

  • Work is generally self-guided with adherence to established patterns and practices - some latitude to challenge and establish new norms

  • Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results

  • Exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments

  • Overseen by managers, more senior team members

  • Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product

  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives

  • Serves as best practice/quality resource within and outside own discipline

  • Proactively anticipate problems and seek new approaches for resolution

  • Provides innovative solutions to complex issues in specialized area

  • Interprets internal or external business issues and recommends solutions/best practices

  • Adhere to all company rules and requirements (e.g., pandemic protocols, Environmental Health & Safety rules) and take adequate control measures in preventing injuries to themselves and others as well as to the protection of environment and prevention of pollution under their span of influence/control

For most roles, we require a minimum of 4 days of in-office presence per week to maintain our culture of excellence and ensure smooth operations, while also recognizing the importance of flexibility and work-life balance. Our pay is based on the role and the necessary skills and education to perform it successfully. The salary or hourly rate offered is determined by the role's specific requirements, including any applicable step rate pay system at the work location. Salary or hourly pay ranges are influenced by labor laws and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) requirements applicable to the work location which may also affect the workplace arrangement of the role.
