It takes the imagination and passion of all of us—from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year—to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.

Job Description

About The Role

Help shape the next generation of cloud-based medical products supporting our growing infusion pump portfolio.

You will join a multi-functional engineering team building applications on our BD Cloud Platform. Depending on product needs, your work may include drug library software, pump management, or pump connectivity.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for an entire product or a significant technical capability spanning multiple products. You will guide architecture, align engineering decisions, and enable teams to deliver reliable, maintainable software. Your initial assignment will reflect product priorities and your expertise.

You will help teams develop new capabilities, extend existing applications, and reuse components where appropriate. Your work will support healthcare professionals in hospitals and patients at home. Our current ecosystem includes C#/.NET services, React/TypeScript applications, Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm. Prior expertise in every technology is not essential. We value engineering judgment, leadership through influence, and accountability for technical outcomes.

Responsibilities

- Offer technical mentorship for a product or shared capability, establishing clear technical direction and guiding delivery across application layers and service boundaries.

- Own product-level architecture and significant design decisions within BD Cloud Platform constraints, collaborating with platform architects and obtaining approval where required.

- Translate ambiguous product needs into actionable technical approaches. Clarify assumptions, evaluate tradeoffs, identify dependencies, and help teams sequence implementation.

- Guide decisions about extending existing applications, creating new components, and reusing capabilities across products, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term maintainability.

- Coordinate technical work across teams, resolve integration challenges, and build alignment on interfaces, responsibilities, and design choices.

- Mentor senior and less-experienced engineers, facilitate design and code reviews, and strengthen the team’s ability to make sound decisions independently.

- Contribute hands-on where it has the greatest impact, including prototypes, critical implementations, and complex investigations. Balance direct contribution with enabling the wider team.

- Partner with Quality Engineers on testability, technical risks, and verification approaches. Guide development testing and unit-test coverage while supporting Quality Engineers’ ownership of final verification.

- Use approved AI-assisted engineering tools with sound judgment and reinforce accountability for the correctness, security, and maintainability of generated solutions.

- Apply our Quality Management System, development lifecycle, and documentation requirements to technical planning and design.

- Help engineering and product leaders assess technical options, risks, dependencies, and investment priorities. Communicate recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

- At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated technical leadership of substantial applications, products, or capabilities spanning multiple teams.

- Experience owning application architecture and guiding complex software initiatives from requirements and design through implementation and verification.

- Strong software engineering fundamentals and depth in one or more modern programming languages, with the ability to evaluate solutions beyond a particular language or framework.

- Practical experience with cloud applications, APIs, service integration, containerized software, Git, and collaborative development workflows.

- Strong understanding of service-oriented and monolithic architectures, including tradeoffs involving reliability, security, performance, maintainability, and operational complexity.

- Ability to turn ambiguous problems into clear technical direction, make assumptions explicit, and evaluate outcomes against requirements.

- Demonstrated ability to mentor experienced engineers, coordinate across teams, and establish alignment through influence and technical reasoning.

- Strong understanding of unit testing, automated verification practices, code review, debugging, and maintainable software design.

- Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated solutions and maintain engineering accountability when using AI-assisted development tools.

- Clear communication, sound judgment, and ownership of technical outcomes, including recognizing when decisions require broader architectural or organizational alignment.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience developing healthcare or other regulated software is highly preferred.

- Experience with C#/.NET, React/TypeScript, or comparable technologies used in modern cloud applications.

- Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, distributed systems, and shared platform integration.

- Experience evolving existing applications while introducing new products or reusable capabilities.

- Familiarity with requirements traceability, technical risk analysis, structured verification, and the V-model.

- A master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent practical experience is also valued.

Learning And Scope

Product-specific technologies, the V-model, and our Quality Management System can be learned in the role. Staff engineers are expected to apply these practices independently as they become familiar with them and guide others in their application.

The balance between architecture, technical coordination, mentoring, and hands-on development will depend on the assignment. Success will be measured by technical outcomes and team effectiveness, not by an individual coding quota. Ownership of CI/CD pipelines and deployment infrastructure is not required. This position does not include production support or on-call responsibilities.
